THE Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League is keen on improving the running of the league to improve chances of getting sponsorship.
The new board led by Chido Chizondo held its first annual general meeting at the ZIFA Village in Mt Hampden, where the board together with the councillors agreed to improve the operations of the league as a foundation for success.
“We need to ensure that we have the governance issues in order, so that as sponsors come to us, they also see that we are serious about our league,” Chizondo said.
“ . . . This has been the biggest challenge of getting sponsorship hence through this AGM we converged to discuss the way forward in the running of the league so as for us to attract sponsorship.”
With six months in office, with their tenure having been met with the withdrawal of clubs from the top flight, Chizondo said that the board will seek to address many of the challenges faced by the league.
“The first six months have been very difficult, I think, importantly from a governance perspective, you know, when we speak of professionalism, sometimes we think it’s just a conversation, but it is about getting into the work, what are our statutes saying, do they speak to the league itself?
“What are our rules and regulations saying, and do they speak to the league? Our regulations also needed to be tighter and stiffer.
“As we go into 2026, we do not want to have a recurrence of clubs coming in and out of the league as they wish,” she said.
Chizondo admitted that sponsorship was one of the key challenges that the ZWPSL clubs and the league has been facing in the past, revealing that the board has since put up contingent measures to ensure that league get requisite sponsorship.
“When I got elected together with my board I did mention that sponsorship was big on our agenda.
“What we have resolved in this AGM is that we sent through applications via the FIFA Forward Manager, and it is applicable because this subvention will come through, and we will be able to assist our teams to ensure that they also do not feel the crunch of the issues that come through with running the women’s games.
“As a league, we have also ensured that we’ve got an active commercial and sponsorship committee whose job is to ensure that as they wake up and go about their business, they will find and source funding for our girls,” said Chizondo.
