DUB poet Albert Nyathi has been awarded by the Women’s University in Africa for his contribution towards gender parity in Zimbabwe.

Nyathi who is the United Nations Women Gender Champion was awarded last week during celebrations marking International Women’s Day.

The award was received on Nyathi’s behalf by the director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Elvas Mari.

Nyathi who wrote two poems, My daughter and My son, and has been outspoken on issues concerning gender inequality said he was humbled by the honour.

“I wasn’t expecting it. It took me by surprise. Art is a collective and collaborative exercise. Art contributes to the betterment of our society. When Babongile or Chigubu make us laugh at our own follies, we correct those mistakes in the process. This honour belongs to all of us collectively,” said Nyathi.

He said it was good to be recognised for the hard work he does to uplift the girl child.

“Money to me is secondary in fact not important but the recognition and certificate is what I cherish the most.

“I’m delighted with the recognition I’m getting from people. It is very encouraging that my work was being noticed. As I didn’t know that people were noticing what I was doing,” said Nyathi.
