A breakdown in the working relationship between Highlanders and head coach Pieter De Jongh is understood to have played a central role in the club’s decision to part ways with the Dutchman at the end of his contract on December 31.
Although the club’s official statement presented the separation as amicable, insiders say that persistent tensions behind the scenes ultimately “messed up things” and made continued cooperation impossible.
Confirming the end of the partnership, Highlanders write: “After constructive discussions and by mutual agreement, the club and head coach Pieter De
Jongh have decided not to extend their working relationship beyond the current contract, which runs till December 31.”
Despite the underlying issues, the club maintained a tone of appreciation in its communiqué.
“The club expresses its sincere appreciation to coach De Jongh for his professionalism, commitment and positive contribution during his tenure. His experience and leadership have been valuable to the team and we thank him for his hard work and dedication.”
The decision, however, is widely believed to stem from concerns around the coach’s conduct and an increasingly unmanageable working environment.
