Workshop exposes rape incident

A life skills and development workshop recently exposed a rape case of three years.

 The incident which occurred in Bulawayo when the victim was 14, came to light when began to fall down mysteriously prompting her guardians to look for help from different prophets and sangomas but they couldn’t help.

 

Recently, the now 17-year-old girl was attending a workshop at school when she revealed the traumatic rape case.

 

She had been falling down under unclear circumstances before she received some counselling.

 

She was reportedly raped by her step-mother’s brother since she was 14 years.

 

Global Association for Equalisation and Development facilitated who facilitate workshops in the province, and helped the victim’s relatives to report the matter to the police.

 

The matter was initially reported under RRB Number 5949257 before it was taken to court on November 8, where the suspect was ordered to return to court on November 22 for

trial.

He will be summoned to come to court after the magistrate advised the examination of the victim who fell during the court proceedings.

 

Director of the organisation, Robert Jambaya said, they help vulnerable children and youths to report cases of abuse and equip them with life skills.

 

“This case was exposed in Bulawayo and the province took it to us here at the headquarters.

 

“We identified that the child was being abused through the training of skills. The victim then opened up that she was raped by her stepmother’s brother.

 

“The rape started when she was 14 and it has caused her to lose her proper health.

 

“She just falls and it happened as well when she was in court prompting the magistrate to postpone the matter to another day.

 

“Initially, aingodonha ari kuchikoro and her relatives had to seek help from different prophets and sangomas so that they find where the problem was coming from.

 

“She has been receiving counselling,” he said.

 

“The girl needs counselling first and medical. She was deemed not fit to stand in court due to her condition of just falling.

 

“We deal with people living with disability, women, orphans and we also give life skills, shelter and food, stand by them at courts,” said Jambaya.

 

A close relative confirmed that the victim has since been taken away from where she was staying.

 

“She has been removed from the house where she was staying. She is now staying with her grandmother for safety reasons.

 

“Surprisingly, the accused’s young brother assaulted the victim’s father for reasons not known,” said the relative.
