World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Director-General, Mr Daren Tang paid a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare today.

His visit to Zimbabwe is the first for a WIPO Director-General.

In an interview after their closed-door meeting, Mr Tang said it was encouraging to note that Zimbabweans are harnessing their innovation, entrepreneurial, and creative potential.

“I think intellectual property will become very important to this country’s development,” he said.

Mr Tang said WIPO was looking at ways to support innovation hubs and creators in Zimbabwe.

He singled out musicians Jah Prayzah and the late Oliver Mutukudzi, as well as entertainer Comic Elder.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said Mr Tang’s visit was key as Zimbabwe is looking at unlocking the value of its intellectual property.

“We need to see how we can harness the knowledge that is at our disposal and use it for the development of our country,” he said.
