CHINA and the United States must steer their relations toward mutual success and global prosperity, as confrontation yields no winners, Chinese President Xi Jinping has said.

President Xi made the remarks last night during a dazzling welcoming banquet hosted for visiting US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Addressing delegates, President Xi noted that China is advancing its modernisation through its 15th Five-Year Plan, while the US is marking its 250th independence anniversary. He emphasised that the goals of both nations are not mutually exclusive.

“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand,” President Xi said. “We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”

Reflecting on 55 years of ties since the historic “Ping-Pong diplomacy,” President Xi said that the bilateral relationship remains the most consequential in the world. He confirmed that he and President Trump had agreed to build a constructive relationship rooted in strategic stability.

“We must make it work, and never mess it up. Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation,” he added, stressing that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation remain the keys to steady progress.

In response, President Trump expressed gratitude for the warm reception, describing the visit and the high-level conversations as “positive and constructive.” He acknowledged the deep-rooted friendship and mutual respect between the American and Chinese peoples.

President Trump echoed his counterpart’s sentiments on the global significance of their ties, saying that the US and China hold a unique opportunity to create a better, more prosperous future for the world.
