ARTISTS have been known to be born, bred and produced in the ghetto, with only one or two exceptions the world over. That myth, however, has been challenged by Andrew Zivengwa (18) from Mutare’s medium-density suburb of Darlington, who is in the art and design genre, specialising mostly in drawing sketches of any portrait presented before him.
The teenager, who only uses a pencil and paper in his craft, is a first year student at Mutare Polytechnic studying Art and Design.
“People have always believed that only those from the ghetto can do wonders in the arts industry. That is a myth. Anyone can be who they want to be.
“We all have gifts and it does not matter where you stay. Everyone has a talent regardless of where they stay. It is just a matter of opportunity. You have to be an opportunist and grab an opportunity when you find one. The unfair thing is that sponsors mainly take a greater liking to those from the ghetto,” he said.
The young artist who was blessed with rich creative artistic abilities, can draw and design just about anything but focuses mainly on people’s portraits.
“I am inspired by people’s portraits which is why I specialise in them. Everyone has a unique face, different shapes and complexions and that fascinates me.”
