convincing win over Mozambique at the National Stadium in Maputo on Saturday night during a first round, second leg qualifier of the Under-20 Fifa World Cup.
Zimbabwe will now meet Nigeria in the second round. The match started late at night because the Angolan match officials who had been set to officiate failed to come and South African officials were called in at the last minute. To make matters worse, heavy rains that fell in Maputo made play difficult on the artificial turf as both teams failed to make meaningful passes for much of the first half.
But the Zimbabweans were not deterred as they resorted to pumping long ball in the second half and were duly rewarded when Mozambican goalkeeper spilled a shot by Mavis Chirandu and allowed Makore to tap in the 50th minute.
The Black Rhinos Queens striker added a second goal in the 71st minute when her long drive beat a drawn out Mozambican keeper. She completed her hat-trick in the 76th minute when she took an effort from the edge of the box to seal a win for the visitors who had won 4-0 in the first leg at home two weeks ago. Zimbabwe coach Langton Giwa was naturally pleased with the victory but also had to endure the sad news of the passing away of his brother back home.
“The condition of the pitch affected our style of play. We had to play long balls in the second half and it paid off and now we wait for Nigeria. The team is going to break camp for a few days before we resume our preparations,” said Giwa. Meanwhile, the team was last night still stranded at OR International Airport in Johannesburg after their plane developed a technical fault.
It is understood that the plane lost its navigation system while in mid-air as it headed for Harare and was recalled back to South Africa.
