MEMBERS of the Young Women for Economic Development observed the national clean-up campaign day by cleaning up Plumtree Border Post yesterday.
The Young Women for Economic Development is an apolitical platform for young women to push for economic opportunities and empowerment, which was launched on August 13 by the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa in Harare.
Plumtree Town Council officials, police and other stakeholders joined the female youths in cleaning up premises at the border post.
President Mnangagwa declared that the first Friday of every month should be dedicated to the national clean-up exercise to inculcate a culture of maintaining a clean environment.
Addressing the participants, Mangwe legislator Cde Hlalani Mguni said the National clean-up campaign helps citizens countrywide to spread awareness of the importance of cleanliness.
She lauded the female youths for participating in the clean-up campaign.
“I would like to thank all stakeholders for sparing time to be part of this exercise to clean the border post and working towards attaining the 2030 vision by our President,” said Cde Mguni.
She the initiative that was launched by the First Lady will help young women to unleash their potential in all sectors of the economy.
Young Women for Economic Development National Programs Coordinator, Ms Sithabile Gandi Ndlovu said the environment is the most important resource for life and a clean environment is essential for healthy living.
“The clean-up campaign’s aim is to change the behaviours of citizens on matters related to littering, general hygiene and proper waste disposal management. We are cleaning up and promoting anti-littering behaviours,” she said.
Ms Ndlovu said their objective is to create an environment where citizens will become sensitive and mindful of littering and adopt best waste management practices through reducing, re-using and recycling.
Plumtree Council Town Secretary, Mr Davis Dumezweni Luthe said the national clean-up day instills a sense of cleanliness everywhere.
He urged citizens to develop a culture of cleaning up wherever they are.-@michieroxy
