MINISTER of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Mandi Chimene commissioned a 30-member local organising committee to spearhead the preparations of the 13th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games to be hosted in Mutare. The games are scheduled for August 15 to 23. The committee comprises officials from several Government departments, colleges and Mutare City Council, while Chimene is the patron.
The supervisory committee includes Manicaland Provincial Administrator and supervisory committee chairperson Fungai Mbetsa, provincial education director Edward Shumba, Town Clerk Obert Muzawazi, provincial youth officer Theresa Mupanduki, and Sports and Recreation Commission provincial co-ordinator Shupikai Berejena.
Mutare District Administrator Cosmas Chiringa is the chief executive, while Mutasa district education officer Zachariah Chikwangwani is the general manager.
In an interview, Berejena confirmed that the committee has already begun its work.
“The Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs has put in place a 30-member committee to spearhead preparations for the Youth Games and the committee, which is made up of respectable individuals, has already begun its work. Our hope is that we will be able to match the standards we set when we last hosted the Youth Games in 2005 or even surpass the benchmark we set then.
“In the same breadth, we would like to passionately appeal to the corporate community to donate generously towards the event.
“We are aware of the economic challenges that we are all going through, but we hope the business community will generously donate towards the success of the event,” he said.
Manicaland successfully hosted the annual event in 2005 and finished third.
