Zimbabwe’s youth continue to recognise the significance of the country’s hard-won independence, appreciating that self-rule has established the foundation for youth empowerment and economic growth.
This year, the nation celebrates its 45th Independence Day under the theme “Zim @45: Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030.”
In an interview, Titotenda Chitamba, a young tobacco farmer from Rushinga District in Mashonaland Central, emphasised the importance of reflecting on the significance of the day and the milestones achieved since Independence. Chitamba highlighted that independence has granted Zimbabweans a sense of autonomy, resilience, and hope.
“The empowerment of youth has been a critical element of Zimbabwe’s post-independence development agenda,” Chitamba remarked. “As a young Zimbabwean who has successfully ventured into tobacco farming, I can attest to the numerous opportunities available to the youth in various sectors, including horticulture, gold mining, and entrepreneurship.”
Chitamba added that these opportunities have not only allowed young people to make meaningful contributions to the country’s economy but have also fostered a sense of pride and ownership in the nation’s development. He cited the Urban Youth Fund as an example, noting that it has been instrumental in providing grants and capacity-building support to youth-led organisations, particularly in agriculture and other key sectors.
“Similarly, vocational training programmes have equipped young people with employable skills, enabling them to become active participants in the country’s economy. These initiatives are a testament to the Government’s commitment to youth empowerment and development,” he said.
However, Chitamba also acknowledged the ongoing trend of youth migration abroad, which has resulted in brain drain and hindered the nation’s progress. To address this, he suggested that it is crucial to highlight the vast opportunities available for young people in Zimbabwe, encouraging them to remain in the country and contribute to its growth.
According to Chitamba, youth empowerment can serve as a powerful catalyst for economic growth. By harnessing their skills, creativity, and energy, young Zimbabweans can drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
“To achieve this, policymakers and stakeholders must prioritise initiatives that promote youth empowerment, such as entrepreneurship development programmes, vocational training, skills development, agricultural development, and innovation and technology hubs,” he stressed. “By focusing on these initiatives, we can unlock the full potential of our youth and build a brighter future for all Zimbabweans.”
Since the advent of the Second Republic, numerous youth-focused initiatives have been introduced, enabling young people to actively participate in the country’s economic recovery. Notably, President Mnangagwa recently launched the Youth Empowerment Scheme, which aims to provide Zimbabwean youths with access to funding, mining, and farming equipment, as well as opportunities to drive economic growth and development in the country.
