GOVERNMENT is keen to leverage on young people’s creativity and innovation to accelerate the country’s drive to implement and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a senior Government official has said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing five-day SDGs 2025 mid-year monitoring and evaluation review workshop which commenced in Mutare today, Deputy Director Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063 Coordination in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Ms Sylocious Chaturuka said youths have an active role to play as their participation and contributions can fuel the drive to attain the desired outcome.
“We are continuously working on capacity building and rising awareness on SDGs so that everyone in the communities can appreciate how they can contribute towards attaining them. After realising that the participation of youths in SDGs was limited, we have dedicated a specific programme which we inaugurated this year. We have rolled out the SDGs proposal writing competition whose objective is to encourage youths to identify any societal problem relating to any specific SDG. Over and above that, they are asked to propose a solution to solve that problem and relate it to the SDGs.
“The response has been overwhelming as we received over 4 000 entries in that regard. This shows that young people are keen to meaningfully contribute towards the attainment of SDGs and we have institutionalised this to become a national annual event. We are going to nurture some their proposals so that young people are also part of providing solutions to the challenges the world is facing,” said Ms Chaturuka.
She said Government will continue working with other stakeholders like business, development partners and civil society organisations, among others.
