Southern Africa youth leadership is calling for stronger institutions, inclusive industrialisation, and collaborative partnerships to accelerate regional integration and sustainable development.
This momentum builds toward the Southern African Youth Development Council (SAYDC) 2026, set for the end of June under the theme “Youth Industrialisation, Leadership and Regional Integration for Sustainable Development.” The gathering underscores the urgency of empowering young people to take the lead in governance, innovation, and collaboration, positioning youth as central drivers of peace, stability, and long-term growth across the region.
Speaking to Zimpapers, Corporate Affairs Director of Intercontinental Youth Connect, Mr Daniel Zinyama emphasised that peace, stability, and innovation must be anchored in youth-led initiatives.
He outlined five key areas where young leaders can transform governance, economies, and communities across the region saying that youth participation in governance is essential for peace and stability.
“Young leaders must champion accountability and civic engagement to build resilient institutions.
“Strong institutions and accountable leadership create the peace and stability necessary for Its development, he said, by promoting ethical leadership and inclusive decision-making, young people can help build societies that endure.”
He highlighted the role of young entrepreneurs and policymakers in shaping regional economies.
He said innovation in agro-processing, digital technology, and value addition can make industrialisation inclusive.
“Industrialisation must be inclusive, ensuring rural communities, women, and marginalised groups have access to opportunities.
“Young entrepreneurs should focus on value addition, digital innovation, and regional trade opportunities,”said Mr Zinyama.
Zinyama underscored the importance of youth-led solutions in infrastructure and energy.
“Youth-led initiatives can drive innovation in renewable energy, transport solutions, and climate-smart infrastructure.
“Supporting young innovators through investment and partnerships will advance sustainable development goals,”he said.
He called for stronger investments in human capital to prepare youth for leadership.
“A skilled and healthy youth population is essential for driving economic growth and creating jobs.
“Investments in education and health equip young people with the tools needed to lead and innovate,”said Zinyama.
Finally, Mr Zinyama emphasised partnerships as the backbone of transformation.
“Collaboration between youth councils, governments, and private sector partners can fast-track SADC Vision 2050 and Agenda 2063.
“Collaboration between youth councils, governments, and development institutions is essential for industrial transformation,”he said.
