Youths make a difference

Dubbed the “Make-a-Difference Concert”, the musical show – which started at 2pm – attracted a host
of musical groups and solo performers who included Revival Melodies, Innovators, Pro-six Musical
Group, Waterfalls UMC group, Rutendo Magwenzi and Loice Jagaji among others.

Speaking during an interview, Mr Again Magobeya, who is a member of Innercity UMC Harare youth executive which organised the event, said the concert was part of his church’s youth ministry’s community service programme which aims to help the poor and underprivileged members of our society.

“We are a youth ministry of Innercity UMC Harare. What we are seeking to achieve on this concert is the fulfilment of James 1:27 which talks about pure religion which refers to taking care of widows, and helping the less privileged.

“We identified four children who needed help with food and school fees during one of our youths exchange programmes with youths from our Murombedzi circuit.
“As such for this concert we are seeking to raise

US$1 000 and groceries for these children,” said Again Magobeya.
He said this concert was also aimed at raising awareness on the need to help the needy in our society with money and food and also promote a spirit of sharing which is one of the virtues of Christianity.

Also speaking in the same interview, Mr Marlvin Munjoma who is one of the pioneers of the community service programme for Innercity UM. Harare youth wing and also a member of the organising committee for this concert said the four children they had identified were bright children with prospects of a good future if assisted with school fees.

“We noticed that the children we identified were underprivileged but bright pupils in their schools. Of these children we have Tanaka Mazvimbakupa, who is a girl aged 13 and going for Form One. She lives with her mother who is a widow.

“We also have Brendon Taruvinga who is a boy doing Grade Five, and Tapiwa Mugocheki, who is in Grade Four and an orphan.

“Tapiwa was abandoned by his guardians and our church in Murombedzi took custody of him.
“Lastly, we have Selina Gombingo who is in Grade Four and lives with her grandmother,” said Marlvin.
Tatenda Raymond Sithole, who is a member of the United

States- based group Innovators and also one of the organising members for the Make-a-Difference Concert, said the concert was open to everyone, adding that tickets were pegged at US$1 to encourage more people to attend.

“We called this concert, the Make-a-Difference Concert because we were saying by paying US$1 to attend the concert you have contributed to changing someone’s life.

“We advertised on Facebook and Twitter and also through posters in town and at our church. We wanted everyone to attend,” said Tatenda.

As the concert continued through-out the afternoon, it appeared most of the performing artistes were new to the music business judging by the fact that most of them were still working on releasing their first gospel music albums.

But ignoring that fact, most of their performances were far from disappointing as one could see the larger section of the crowd which was largely youthful dancing and cheering from their chairs.

Innovators, who participated at the concert as guest artistes, took advantage of the concert to launch their two albums, namely “Just for You” which was recorded in United States and another album titled “Undeserved Grace” which the group recorded while in Zimbabwe during the festive holiday.
