Youths aged between 20 and 24 years have recorded the highest number of new sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases in Bulilima District between January and August this year, according to statistics from the National AIDS Council (NAC).

The data shows that 186 STI cases were recorded in this age group, with males and females each accounting for 93 cases. The 25 to 29-year age group followed, with 162 cases — 92 males and 70 females.

Among adolescents aged 15 to 19, there were 109 cases, with females accounting for 66 and males 43. Males aged 30 to 34 years recorded 61 cases, while females in the same group recorded 38.

Alarmingly, STI infections were also recorded among children aged 10 to 14 years, with four cases — three females and one male.

In neighbouring Mangwe District, Syphilis was the most reported STI, with 125 positive cases recorded among people aged 20 to 24 years. The 15 to 19-year age group had 65 positive cases, while 42 cases were recorded among those aged 30 to 34 years.

NAC Bulilima District AIDS Coordinator, Mr Ronald Hanyane, said targeted programming for adolescent girls and young women was underway to address the worrying trend.

“The high cases of STIs among youngsters are worrisome, and we have several programmes that educate them on HIV and STI prevention. Many factors put young girls at risk — including poverty, lack of supervision, school dropouts, and long distances to school,” said Mr Hanyane.

He said the data showed distinct patterns between genders and age groups.

“We’ve noticed that among those below 24 years, females account for most STI cases, while among those aged 25 and above, males dominate the statistics. Often, these older males target the younger girls,” he added.

Mr Hanyane said community-based awareness, mentorship, and youth-friendly health services are being strengthened to reduce new infections in both districts.
