Youths in Mashonaland West province have been encouraged to take agricultural activities seriously as they are a life-changing practice that has the potential to positively impact on livelihoods.

The call was made by Mashonaland West Affirmative Action Group (AAG) chairperson Cde Mike Chimombe last week.

Cde Chimombe, who is also the Zanu-PF national youth wing deputy secretary for information, said agriculture was the mainstay of the local economy.

Provincial Youth League secretary for administration, Cde Ability Gandawa, said youths were expected to continue benefiting from the farm downsizing exercise that is underway.

“There is downsizing of big farms underway and our priority is that youths from this province should also benefit from this exercise,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking in Selous last week, Mhondoro-Mubaira district youth executive member Cde Munyaradzi read four resolutions from the district, including the need for the party to set aside seats for youths.

“We have made four resolutions as a district: the first one being that Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa is our presidential candidate for this year’s harmonised elections,” he said.

“The other resolutions are that one administration (post) for Chegutu to be contested by youths. Out of the nine wards in Mhondoro-Mubaira, two should also be set aside for youths and lastly, we also want Government to allocate us inputs.”

Norton district chairperson Cde Tatenda Chibandambira condemned the imposition of candidates.

“In this new political dispensation we say no to imposition of candidates,” he said.

“Those who will be contesting should approach us first and the onus would be on us to elect a candidate who suits our needs.”
