AFTER a tough start to their South African Telkom Netball League campaign, Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Eagles finally found their wings, clinching their first win of the tournament in their third match on Monday.
The championships are being held in the North West Province. The Eagles overcame Limpopo Baobabs 56 – 48 in a hard-fought contest that showcased their growing confidence. Star player, Lesibani Munjanji-Karis produced a stand-out performance, earning the Player of the Match award and a R1 000 cash prize for her efforts.
Zambezi Eagles coach, Ropafadzo Mutsauki, said he was thrilled with the team’s performance, particularly given that they were missing several key players due to injury.
“I am very happy with the win. Munjanji-Karis played very well, she listened to our instructions to cut down on long balls, and that was key to our victory,” said Mutsauki.
The result could serve as a major morale boost for the Zimbabwean side, who are aiming to build momentum as the competition progresses. The Telkom Netball League features some of South Africa’s top sides, and the Zambezi Eagles were invited to participate as part of preparations for the upcoming Netball World Cup Qualifiers, providing valuable experience and exposure for the players.
Defending champions, Free State Crinums, who opened their campaign with a 58–46 win over the Spar Baby Proteas, remain the team to beat. The Zambezi Eagles had previously suffered back-to-back losses, first to North West Flames (51–46) on Saturday, and then to Golden Fireballs (61–40) on Sunday.
Zimbabwe sent a squad made up largely of players within the national team framework, to South Africa, to sharpen their skills under competitive pressure and Mutsauki is pleased with the progress.
“The team that played the second match was very good. Yes, we lost the game, but it helped us assess our players and select those who will represent Zimbabwe at the World Cup Qualifiers. It was a very good learning experience,” he said.
