A suspected 43-year-old fraudster was yesterday arraigned before the courts for duping a Zambian maize supplier of 175,2 tonnes of maize worth almost US$47 000.Collen Mutevhani appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with fraud.

Mr Mahwe remanded him to June 11 on $200 bail.

As part of his bail conditions Mutevhani was ordered to surrender his passport and to report once every Monday at ZRP Chiredzi.

He was also ordered not to interfere with witnesses and to reside at the address he gave to the court.

The prosecutor Ms Idah Maromo alleged that sometime in February 2012, Mutevhani hatched a plan to defraud Chama Musonda whom he knew was in the business of supplying maize from Zambia.

It is alleged that in pursuant to his plan he approached Musonda and misrepresented that he had a contract to supply 10 tonnes a week to National Foods through a company called Intergrain.

The court heard that Musonda got interested in the deal and supplied him with six 30 tonne trucks weighing up to 175.2 tonnes.

It is the State’s case that he was promised that his maize would be paid for two weeks after delivery.

It is alleged that when Musonda followed up payment he discovered

that Mutevhani had vacated all his known places.

Musonda then reported the matter to the police who carried out investigations and proved that Mutevhani never supplied any grain to National Foods nor Intergrain.

Musonda suffered a prejudice of $46 428 and nothing was recovered.
