Zanu-PF has commended Government and civil servants for reaching an agreement on salary negotiations saying they dealt a blow to opposition parties that wanted to hijack the negotiations for political expediency.
In a statement yesterday, Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said the development was a “step in the right direction” as it was in line with the Zanu-PF election manifesto.
“The ruling Zanu-PF party wishes to applaud the Government for reaching an agreement with civil servants over salary increment.
“This is a hugely commendable development and a step in the right direction considering that it is in line with the party’s election manifesto which emphasised, among other things, the need to improve the welfare of all workers.”
Government and civil servants on Monday agreed on a salary deal that saw the lowest paid employee getting three quarters of the Poverty Datum Line.
Government increased the total package for the lowest-paid civil servant to US$375, up from US$297.
Another salary increment is expected mid-year.
Government is also considering non-monetary benefits for the civil servants.
Cde Gumbo thanked the negotiating teams for coming up with an amicable agreement at a time the country was trying hard to get the economy “moving” through Zim Asset.
“The understanding that was forged by the two parties culminating in a workable formula is clear testimony of the level of patriotism that the negotiators and those that they represent have since the nation is facing hardships brought about by years of unjustified sanctions,” he said.
“In the same vein, and more importantly, the party wishes to thank the negotiating teams for not bending to pressure from opposition political parties which had shown an evil desire to turn these negotiations into political gains. We also wish to encourage all progressive thinking citizens to continue working with Government for the good of the nation.”
Government also agreed to mobilise an additional US$3 million every month for the decompression of salary grades, a move that would see the workers being paid according to seniority, qualifications and experience.
