ZAPU will not be able to reach out to every corner of the country in its campaigns ahead of the 31 July harmonised elections as the party is struggling to raise funds for the programme. In an interview yesterday, Zapu president Dr Dumiso Dabengwa said his party was facing a serious shortage of funds to cover the entire country in its campaign programmes.
“As Zapu, we have deployed our teams on the ground to mobilise support ahead of the elections, but we will not be able to cover all parts of the country because of challenges in terms of resources,” he said.
However, because of inadequate resources, the Zapu president would only be able to address rallies in Masvingo and Chitungwiza to drum up support for his party.
Dr Dabengwa, a former Zipra intelligence supremo broke away from Zanu-PF in 2008.
Zapu, which has been plagued by financial problems since its formation five years ago, has also reportedly resorted to selling copies of its manifesto to try and raise funds for its campaign programmes.
The manifesto cost $1 for two.
The party’s alternate secretary general, Dr Strike Mnkandla confirmed they are selling the manifesto. He said the party did not have money.
“Yes, we are selling our manifesto. In fact when we were launching the document, we printed few copies yet there were so many people who wanted the manifesto.
“We actually asked people to pay $1 for the manifesto so that we could raise money and reprint the copies for distribution to people in rural areas.”
Last year, the party suffered the humiliation of being evicted from rented premises in Bulawayo, which housed its headquarters after failing to pay rentals.
