SEVEN years ago, the Zimbabwe Cricket leadership was in chaos after the board, and its CEO, were suspended by the Sports Commission.
In June 2019, the SRC wielded the axe and suspended the ZC executive, led by Tavengwa Mukuhlani, and their CEO, Givemore Makoni.
An interim committee was appointed to run the game.
Mukuhlani and his team were accused of, among other things, electoral malpractices and financial misappropriation.
However, the SRC’s decision drew a fierce backlash from the ICC who suspended Zimbabwe from all cricket activities under their auspices.
The ICC also froze funding to Zimbabwe and gave an ultimatum for the reinstatement of the ZC board.
The ICC board unanimously decided that Zimbabwe had failed to fulfil its obligation to ensure there was no government interference in its administration for cricket.
ICC funding was suspended and representative teams from the country were barred from participating at ICC events.
Fast forward to 2026.
On Friday, the ZC bosses were celebrating after winning the ultimate domestic gong, when it comes to the administration of sport in this country.
ZC won the National Association of the Year award.
It’s a huge transformation for the association, and their leaders – who are still in charge today – from the chaos of seven years ago when they were suspended on the back of a number of allegations.
That this award was handed over by the SRC, who are in charge of the ANSA, reflects how much things have changed for the ZC and their leaders.
Sikandar Raza, a cricketer, won the Sportsman of the Year and also took the biggest prize of them all when he captured the Sportsperson of the Year gong.
It’s also very likely that had the ICC T20 World Cup been held last year, the Chevrons would probably have also won the Team of the Year award.
