ZCTU snubs NCA

by the National Constitutional Assembly for a “No Vote” when a referendum on the new constitution is held.
The labour movement together with the NCA snubbed the constitution out­reach programme saying they will not participate in a process being spear­headed by politicians.

The constitution making process is being spearheaded by the three political parties in the inclusive Government.

Delivering a solidarity message at the celebrations at Gwanzura on Tuesday, NCA representative Mr Canfred Pam­buka claimed his organisation will cam­paign for the “No Vote” with the ZCTU.
“We have made a resolution together with ZCTU that we will not support a constitution that is done by a few peo­ple. Together with the ZCTU and work­ers we will push for a ‘No Vote’,” Mr Pambuka said.

However, Mr Nkiwane shot down Mr Pambuka’s claims when he took to the podium saying the ZCTU had not yet made a resolution on the constitu­tion.
“Something was said earlier about us that we would push for a ‘No Vote’ at the referendum.

“As workers we don’t have a position yet, we will wait for Zimbabweans to see the document first and decide what they want. If they say they want it, who are we to dispute it?
“When the document is out, we will subject it to the internal process of the ZCTU and only after that will we come up with a position but let me assure the workers that we will be guided by what you want.”

Other civic society groups partici­pated in the constitution making process. Non governmental organisa­tions that participated include Crisis Coalition in Zimbabwe, the Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe and the Students Solidarity Trust.
The constitution making process has been marred by delays, confusion, infighting and lack of funds.
