Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) officials have turned away 978 people under the ongoing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) national blitz in Gokwe for various reasons. The programme commenced on October 10 and to date reports are that 978 people have been turned away for reasons such as having no National Identity Card, being under age, being aliens, defaced National Identity card or using drivers licence.
Midlands provincial elections officer Mrs Dorcas Mpofu said the exercise was going on very well, despite those who were turned away.
“Our officers are working well despite the fact that they have to travel from their areas to places where there is telecommunication network access to communicate the latest statistics to the provincial office,” she said.
“Registration is going smoothly despite delays in communicating statistics. To date, 978 people have been turned away for various reasons such as having no National Identity cards, under age, alien, defaced National Identity card or drivers licence.”
Mrs Mpofu said 202 centres in Gokwe had not submitted their statistics as a result of poor telecommunications network.
