From Noah Pito in Hurungwe
Zesa Holdings has drilled 25 boreholes that are expected to increase access to portable water in five wards in Hurungwe district.
The initiative is part of the parastatal’s corporate social responsibility exercise.
Hurungwe district administrator Ms Makepeace Muzenda said Zesa’s gesture will lessen the burden for people in communities who have been walking long distances to access clean water.
The communities, she said, have also lived under the spectre of water-borne diseases for a long time.
“All the 25 boreholes were drilled during the President (Emmerson Mnangagwa)’s first 100-days in office,” she said. “For now, we are very happy since the beneficiaries no longer walk long distances in search of potable water.
“This is an opportunity for villagers to now start income-generating projects like gardening and poultry from which they can realise school fees for their children.”
At least six boreholes were drilled in Ward 2, Ward 3 (one borehole), Ward 19 (10) and Ward 21 (Seven) in rural areas of Hurungwe district. Another borehole was drilled in Karoi Town Council’s Ward 7, which will serve Hurungwe Children’s Home that has been facing perennial water challenges.
This is the first phase of a programme that targets to drill 58 more boreholes in at least seven other wards in the district starting this August.
Ms Muzenda said the 25 boreholes had given the communities a chance to transform their lives through the establishment of nutrition gardens to enhance food security.
