Zhombe accident victims identified

THE Midlands Provincial Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has released the names of nine of the eleven people who died when a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus collided head-on with a haulage truck near Summerview shopping centre in Zhombe along the Gokwe-Kwekwe highway on Friday night.

Eleven people died while seven others were injured in the accident that occurred at the 106km peg at around 7 PM.

A Gokwe bound commuter omnibus which had 18 people on board collided head-on with a haulage truck which was heading towards Kwekwe.

The provincial CPU coordinator Mr Thompson Siziba said yesterday that the nine had been positively identified by their relatives.

“The victims have been identified as Benson Peter, Tendai Dube, Tanatswa Shambo, Innocent Shambo, Letwin Munonzi, Thomas Mpofu, Phadhisi Dube, Surprise Chakanyuka and Tobi Moyo. We still have two bodies that are still to be identified and are at Kwekwe District Hospital mortuary,” he said.

Mr Siziba said the seven passengers who were injured in the accident are; Talent Gwazani, Tafadzwa Shambo, Lucia Takawira, Ashly Guta, Erick Mudenga, Moreme Makhosana and Alice Mazano.

He said all the injured were still admitted to Kwekwe District Hospital.

Mr Siziba said the CPU had submitted a request to Government for assistance to bury the deceased and was awaiting a response.
