The Zimbabwe Institution of Engineering (ZIE) has been applauded for reaching out to engineering students and graduates in a bid to harness their potential through enhanced training and capacitation.

ZIE hosted its second edition of the graduate career indaba in Bulawayo at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) yesterday where students and graduates in the engineering sector managed to network with senior engineers who are already in the industry.

In an interview, Civil Engineering student at Nust Mr Greatwits Duru said interactive programmes being organised by ZIE assist students to enhance their career paths.

“We are so excited that it has been a walk in the dark without such conferences. When we see the ZIE board reaching out to students, it brings hope in the sector” said Mr Duru.

“We need to have an institution that bridges the gap between graduates and engineers that are already in the industry. Bringing up mentors to us motivates and opens doors for us.”

Civil and Water Engineering student Mr Lancelot Matange said ZIE has given them a chance to learn from professionals already in the field.

“This programme that has been initiated by ZIE is very important to us as budding engineers,” said Mr Matange.

He said as a result of the conference, they now appreciate the importance of using various software in the engineering sector as the world turns into a global village through use of technology.

Another student who is doing Electronic Engineering at Nust Miss Busisiwe Ncube who is also a member of ZIE Matabeleland Chapter board student representative, said students should start to register with regulatory bodies so that they benefit from the services including assistance in their projects, organising their internship and mentorship.

ZIE president Engineer Thami Mpala said the conference was meant to bridge the gap between industry and graduates.

He said their programmes are meant to engage students and graduates so that they can be able to contribute to national development.

“We are helping to develop a culture of working together to harness skills and develop new  technologies relevant to industry,” he said.

ZIE is the professional organisation of engineers in Zimbabwe but membership is also open to engineering students. – @SikhulekelaniM1
