TOP Zimbabwean animator and film director, Oscar Lwalwe, has been invited to a Varsity university expo set for Botswana for his science fiction animation, Gladys Most Wanted.
The expo will take place in Botswana and Bulawayo from December 15-17.
The theme for the Varsity Film Expo 2022 is “Africa animating SDGs,” which supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals for a better world.
Lwalwe is among other 30 animators from Africa and the Tozeza Baba movie director is excited to be part of animators in the region.
“The Varsity Expo had an open call for short animated films on social media and I felt it was my opportunity to submit my animation which I felt I could participate in.
“The animation submitted is called ‘Gladys Most Wanted,’ a science fiction story of a young girl who possesses supernatural blood which can infect other people to possess supernatural powers.
“This girl is being searched by other people from another planet who want to use her blood to awaken people on their planet so they can raid earth.
“The Varsity Film Expo, is an annual event for emerging content creators at universities.
“We feature film screenings, speaking sessions, workshops, exhibitions, a book launch and awards honouring the best entries.
“The two-day programme is tailored to satisfy the needs and tastes of young and emerging filmmakers although it’s open to other attendees,” he said.
The Varsity Film Expo puts critical SDG issues into the limelight and stimulates conversations and dialogue around them.
“The festival has only 30 animations selected in Africa and in Zimbabwe there are only two animations selected including mine.
“The festival is being hosted in Gaborone Botswana, and the festival has 17 awards with over 1600 people expected to attend.
“My animation was produced by university student, Shamaine Mutemererwa, and Happiness Matondo.
“The animation casts voices of Chimwemwe Chipidza, Talent Dhorobha and Nyasha Gwari,” he added.
The director, who is a graphic designer by profession, co-founded an animation production B.A.G Comics in 2017.
“In 2021 I worked on a major local film with local productions which I wrote and directed titled Tozeza Baba the Movie.”
