ZIMBABWEAN athletes have struggled for international recognition this year with only three performing to satisfactory levels.
Marathon runners Cuthbert Nyasango and Cephas Pasipamire were the pick of the field with times good enough for the All-Africa Games, World Championships and the Olympics.

Nyasango who holds the 42.196km record ran the best marathon time by a Zimbabwean when he finished third in the Praha Marathon.
His 2 hours 09 minutes 52 seconds is the 105th best time of the year.

Pasipamire was fifth in the Pyongyang Marathon clocking 2 hours 14 minutes 41 seconds also within the ‘A’ standard qualifying time for major world athletics events.

Next year’s major event will be the All-Africa Games and both athletes will have to schedule their races and training to accommodate the continental showpiece.

Also in running but on the track in information obtained from the International Association of Athletics Federations website, sprinter Gabriel Mvumvure is 35th in the 100m. His season’s best was 10.07 seconds within the qualifying mark for the All-Africa Games and World Championships.

With injuries troubling Ngoni Makusha, the 100m and long jump record holder this season, another athlete, long jumper Paul Madzivire, who is based in the US was 94th with a leap of 7.87m.

Most athletes are back at training preparing for 2015 and those in the US are expected to start participating in the indoor circuit in December while locals will still be working on building strength.
