ZIM COMMEMORATES SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

AS Zimbabwe joins the world in marking Suicide Prevention Month, commemorated each September, this year’s focus is on “Changing the Narrative: Fostering Hope Through Action.”

Locally, the campaign is being led by the Rights in Action Project, which brings together the Federation of Organisations of Disabled People in Zimbabwe (FODPZ) and a network of partners.

These partners include CBM Global, the African Disability Forum, Inclusion Africa, Zimbabwe National Mental Health Association (ZIMNAMH) and several national disability associations.

Mental health remains one of Zimbabwe’s most under-resourced health areas, leaving thousands exposed to stigma, neglect and preventable tragedy.

Advocates say that this is no longer acceptable.

FODPZ national director, Leonard Marange, said communities must be empowered to respond with compassion and practical support.

“In our own neighbourhood, people are suffering in silence. Suicide is preventable if we open conversations, create safe spaces and ensure mental health care is available where people live.

“This is about saving lives but it is also about restoring dignity and hope,” he said.

Zimbabweans are being urged to stand together, fight stigma, and help build a culture of openness where people can seek support without shame.

Campaigners say that preventing suicide is not only a health isse but also a test of society’s humanity.
