ZIM FILM-MAKER, AUTHOR mafundikwa HONOURED IN UK

FILM-MAKER, author and graphic designer, Dr Saki Mafundikwa, has done it again.

The TED speaker and lecturer, is among the 12 creatives who are set to be conferred with honorary degrees at the University of the Arts London (UAL) graduation ceremony on July 11.

According to the UAL website, Dr Mafundikwa was selected among the “twelve exceptional change-makers and creatives” who are making an impression. Dr Mafundikwa was honoured for his influence and impact as a creative whose works continue to touch hearts of many.

He is the founder and director of Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts, a design and new media training collection. Last year, Dr Mafundikwa also won the 2022 Presidential Award (Lifetime Achievement Award) from UK’s Design and Art Direction for his first book on Afrikan typography.

Dr Mufundikwa is now in line for another honour.

“University of the Arts London is delighted to announce twelve exceptional change-makers and creatives who will be awarded honorary degrees at the 2023 graduation ceremonies, starting on 11 July.

“From pioneering technologies for textile circularity to broadcasting on the frontline of the war in Ukraine, this year’s honoraries span a wide range of practices and fields – each using their creativity to drive change against global issues such as the climate injustice, structural racism, and economical and regional inequality.

“Creativity has a role in solving great problems – to imagine and shape a better world. Our remarkable honoraries are the epitome of this, using their creative and cultural influence to initiate significant change. – James Purnell, Vice-Chancellor and President of UAL,” reads part of the UAL website.

Fellow creatives, who are vying for honours include Cyndi Rhoades, who has been working on combating challenges of textile waste.

British-Nigerian entrepreneur and cosmetic scientist, Florence Adepoju, Gavin Jantjes, the first black full time lecturer on Fine Art exiled from South Africa along with Dr Gus Casely-Hayford are some of the creatives set to receive their certificate.

Hernando Chindoy (Colombia), Inua Ellams (Nigeria), James Waterhouse (BBC Ukraine correspondent), Dr Lesley-Ann Noel, Peter Hoar (film and TV director), Shantel Martin artist and academic) and Beatrix Ong (fashion designer) are among the recipients joining Dr Mafundikwa on the podium on July 11.
