A 33-year-old Zimbabwean man has been arrested at Beitbridge Border Post, on the South African side after attempting to smuggle into the neighbouring country, 769 commercial explosives concealed inside four big bags.
The man who was driving a truck was intercepted by members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) early Saturday morning.
In a statement, SAPS confirmed the arrest and said investigations were still in progress.
“The concerted efforts by the Police at the Beitbridge Border Post to eradicate the smuggling of illegal goods into the country, continue to yield positive results following the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect in the early hours of Saturday, 23 July 2022 for attempting to smuggle commercial explosives into the country.

“The suspect was arrested at about 01:30, as he crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe. This after his truck was stopped and upon searching it, Police discovered commercial explosives concealed inside four big bags,” SAPS said.
Members of the Musina Explosive Unit attended the scene and three reels of detonating cord and at least 769 units of blasting cartridges were confiscated.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has since commended the members for their vigilance as manifested during the interception of the alleged smuggler.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court today facing a charge of smuggling and possession of explosives.
