A DANGEROUS Zimbabwean fugitive who broke out of a Botswana prison over a year ago has finally been captured thanks to a united front between police and the public.
Abraham Sibanda (37), a convicted rapist and serial thief, was cornered in Zimbabwe on 29 May 2025 after a dramatic manhunt led by Masunga Police and villagers from Sekakangwe, working hand in hand with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
“This is a clear example of what happens when communities and law enforcement unite,” said Assistant Commissioner Near Bagali, the Botswana Police Service spokesperson.
Sibanda had escaped from Mahalapye Prison in April 2024 while serving a 13-year sentence for a string of serious crimes including rape, housebreaking, theft, resisting arrest, and illegally entering Botswana.
Police say the hardened criminal the hardened criminal recently went on another crime spree in Sekakangwe Village between 28 and 29 May 2025.
“He is linked to fresh cases of burglary and theft and was caught red-handed with stolen items that have since been positively identified by the victims,” police confirmed.
His arrest marked the end of a cross-border reign of terror and a strong display of international cooperation.
“The power of police-public partnerships has never been more evident,” added Bagali. “We also commend the bilateral relations between Botswana and Zimbabwe in the fight against cross-border crimes.”
Sibanda is now back behind bars as investigations continue.
Justice may take time, but it never forgets!
