PROMISING Bulawayo squash player Ryan Gwidzima was the toast of Zimbabwe’s Under-13 team at the South African Inter-Provincial Tournament staged last week.
The Kumalo Primary School learner won all his three matches to propel his team to a third place finish at the event.
Nick Paul from Hellenic won eight games, while St John’s Daniel Bezuidenhout won seven games, Hamzah Patel won six and Mark Johnson three.
Under-13 team coach Pieter Bezuidenhout was excited about the result, saying it is one of the best achieved by his team.
“The boys all did themselves and their country very proud. Zimbabwe has a narrow pool of players to choose from compared to South Africa, so making third place is truly an amazing result,” Bezuidenhout said.
Gwidzima said he went into the tournament with a lot of confidence and is happy with his performances.
Zimbabwe sent five boys’ teams, which included two Under-16 teams, Under 14, Under-13 and Under-11, to the tournament that was staged in various cities across South Africa.
The tournament was contested for by South African provincial teams and Zimbabwe’s junior sides.
The Under-11 team also came third after winning six of their eight matches, losing one and drawing one. The Under-16 A side took fifth position.
