A Zimbabwean student and innovator, Sean Mavhima, has made a mark on the global stage after securing 2nd place at the prestigious BRICS+ Youth Innovation Summit 2026 held April this year in Pretoria, South Africa.

The summit, hosted at the Tshwane University of Technology, brought together some of the brightest young innovators, entrepreneurs, and changemakers from across BRICS nations and the Global South.

The event served as a high-level platform for showcasing cutting-edge solutions addressing global challenges such as climate change, energy access, and sustainable development.

Competing in the Sustainable Development and Green Innovation pitch competition, Mavhima stood out among a highly competitive field of participants representing multiple countries. The competition evaluated projects based on innovation, impact, and scalability criteria that placed only the most exceptional solutions at the top.

His project, ‘VoltageAfrica’, focuses on building decentralised, AI-powered energy systems designed to expand access to clean and reliable electricity across underserved communities in Africa. The solution integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain to enable efficient energy distribution and peer-to-peer energy trading.

“This was more than just a competition it was a convergence of some of the most promising young minds from across the world,” said Mavhima.

“To emerge among the top innovators on such a global platform is both humbling and a strong validation of the work we are doing.”

The achievement is being hailed as a major milestone, not only for Mavhima but also for Zimbabwean youth innovation. Standing among the best innovators from BRICS+ and Global South countries, his recognition underscores the growing potential of African-led solutions in solving global challenges.

Beyond the award, Mavhima was also selected to participate in the BRICS Summer School 2026, which will be held at the University of Johannesburg in September. This prestigious programme brings together top-performing participants from the summit and offers advanced training, mentorship, and global exposure.

Experts have described the win as a significant breakthrough, positioning Mavhima as one of the emerging young innovators to watch on the international stage. His work aligns with the global push toward sustainable energy and inclusive development, key priorities within BRICS cooperation frameworks.

The BRICS+ Youth Innovation Summit itself is designed to foster collaboration between young entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders, creating pathways for scalable solutions and global partnerships.

Mavhima’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when young people are equipped with vision, resilience, and opportunity. His success sends a strong message to aspiring innovators across Zimbabwe and Africa: that local ideas, when developed with purpose and innovation, can compete and win on the global stage.

As he continues to develop ‘VoltageAfrica’, Mavhima is calling for greater collaboration, investment, and support for youth-led solutions addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “The goal is not just to innovate, but to build solutions that transform lives at scale.”
