ZIMBABWE’S representatives at this year’s World Taekwondo Grand Prix in South Korea, Britney Kadewere and Nathanael Brown, are racing against time to get enough funding for the trip set for August 24.
The duo qualified for the prestigious tournament which is a pre-qualifier for the Olympics.
The 21-year old Kadewere from Kwekwe and the Zvishavane-based 19-year-old Brown are currently in camp in the capital ahead of their departure.
Speaking after yesterday’s training Kadewere said she is confident that they will raise the country’s flag high at the tournament despite their limited financial resources.
“I am very happy to be in camp ahead of my trip to South Korea and the preparations have been going on well. We have been practicing for the past two weeks and everything is going on well.
“We have been doing all we can to make sure that we leave a mark at our inaugural world championships. I have been working under my coaches and it looks promising,” said Kadewere.
Brown was also full of confidence and believes he will do well at the tournament.
“I am very happy that I managed to qualify for the tournament and I am ready for the challenge. There will be tough competition, but I am looking forward to the competitions.”
Zimbabwe Taekwondo Association director of marketing Placidia Brown said they are calling on corporates to assist.
“We are glad that we got the support from the World Taekwondo Association in terms of flights and accommodation but we still have challenges.
“There is still need for uniforms, tracksuits, protective gear and we are left with less than two weeks. The uniforms alone go for US$300 without gloves and protective gear and they need at least three pairs.
“It is difficult for us to achieve all that considering the time we are left with and I hope a miracle will happen.
“The standards at the Grand Prix are world class and we cannot manage to disappoint,” said Brown.
