WILFRED Mashaya has applauded young martial artists who represented the country at the International Combat Organisation World Championships for their outstanding performance.
Zimbabwe had a nine-member team in Swansea, Wales, including Mashaya a renowned martial artist, and eight young members taking part at the tournament, and they got 43 medals in individual and team events.
It was a tough competition with countries such as US and England among the top competitors.
But the young team delivered a powerful performance to collect 14 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals.
“I am so happy. Being there first international appearance and on a world stage, competing with countries like United States of America, England, France and many other countries, I was really happy that they did well.
“This is a proud moment for Zimbabwe. The kids worked hard, showed great discipline, and gave their best. I am so proud of what they achieved,” said Mashaya.
They competed in weaponry categories, ranging from traditional weapons, creative weapons and freestyle weapons.
The medal haul highlighted strong individual and team performances.
In the girls’ division, Dean Gwatah earned one silver in individual freestyle weapon and three bronze medals in team events.
Anotida Hove clinched three gold medals in team events and one silver in team freestyle weapon.
Thandeka Moyo won three gold and three silver medals in team events and in individual competition while Anenyasha Hove collected four bronze medals in team and individual events.
The boys were also up to the challenge with Takudzwa Chizema winning three gold and three silver medals in individual and team events.
Wilfred Mashaya Jnr earned one gold and the silver medals while Arnold Mudzengerere brought home one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
Brian Mupindu Jnr claimed one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Mashaya, who was in charge of the team was crowned Kobudo World Champion after claiming top spots in individual creative weapon for black belts and individual traditional weapon.
He added two silver medals in individual freestyle weapon and mixed creative weapon.
The Zim Ninja Academy founder credited their success to teamwork, dedication and the support from the Zimbabwean community in the UK.
“The children fought with heart and carried the Zimbabwean flag high. This win proves that our country has world-class talent.
“This is a successful outing and is part of our fight against drugs and substance abuse among the youth,” said Mashaya.
Other countries that participated at the tournament include Spain, Ireland, Ukraine, Italy, Cyprus, US, England, Scotland, Brazil, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Germany, France, Nepal and hosts Wales.
