“Protest”, performed in tribute to Havel, will premiere at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria on September 13.
It will then be showcased at the Theatre on the Square, in Sandton, Johannesburg, on September 16 before rounding off the three- city tour at the Fugard Theatre Studio in Cape Town on September 18.
The performances will be accompanied by an exhibition of photographs of Havel.
“Protest” is a story of two men. Vanek is a protest artist, who similar to Havel suffers political imprisonment for his work. By contrast, Staneck is a compromising playwright who gets promoted because he puts a positive spin to the difficulties his countrymen are facing.
The play will be performed in a unique style by a Zimbabwean theatre company, Rooftop Promotions. It develops artistic initiatives that influence policy through community mobilisation and publicity of topical issues simultaneously promoting freedom of expression.
