Tourism Fair in Harare yesterday, DPM Mutambara said tourism was now a key driver of the economy and would continue to get Government support.
“What we are saying is come to Zimbabwe and you will be exposed not only to Zimbabwe but to Sadc, come to Zimbabwe and be exposed to Comesa and to Africa.
“We have seen the importance of cross-selling our tourism product so that the buyer buys a regional and Pan African package.”
“As you have seen we have a bigger package than last year. We have grown bigger and better, bigger that Indaba in South Africa because this is now a continental event.”
DPM Mutambara said it was easier for big economies like the United States and China to listen to a grouping because of the population and the value of the gross domestic product than a single country.
“We have a number of academic institutions and let us package them so that people go and see. Institutions like the University of Zimbabwe, Fort Hare where President Mugabe, president Mandela and Sobukwe attended have lots of history that needs to be packaged under tourism. We need the tourism of the struggle,” he said. He said tourism was a key driver in the economy, which required everyone’s support.
“Tourism is now a key feature of the economy because it creates jobs. I heard that banks were saying tourism is a slow mover and will not fund the sector,” he said.
DPM Mutambara said Government viewed tourism as an ecosystem involving participation of all stakeholders.
The official opening was attended by Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu, Information Communication and Technology Minister Nelson Chamisa,
Zanu-PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Cde Rugare Gumbo, Zanu-PF Secretary for Youth Cde Absolom Sikhosana, president of the Zimbabwe Council of Tourism Mr Glen Stutchbury and ZTA board chairperson Mrs Marah Hativagove, among other dignitaries.
