adminempowerment. Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe said the summit will compel African heads of state and government to renew and accelerate their commitments in responding to HIV and Aids with special focus on women.
“We are saying we want our governments to fully implement conventions such as CEDAW, so that the empowerment of women in various sectors is achieved in its totality. So as we meet in Victoria Falls next month we will be demanding action,” said DPM Khupe.
A visiting mission from the Global Coalition on Women and Aids is in the country to finalise on preparations of the summit.
The network’s executive director, Dr Jantine Jacobi — who is leading the mission — said the summit will assess and review progress made by African countries in addressing women’s issues.
She said the summit will also provide African women leaders with a platform for increased ownership, commitment and action for women and girls in Africa.
“The summit will also look at the HIV and Aids pandemic, which is wreaking havoc especially on women and children. So the global campaign on the three zeros will take centre stage,” she said.
The two-day summit, which starts on May 25, will attract delegates from women’s movements, African governments and civil society from the continent’s 54 countries.
Zimbabwe has been lauded for being a champion of women empowerment as Government made great strides in the emancipation of women through legislation and other activities.
