ZIMBABWE had a decent outing at the COSSASA games after a haul of 118 medals, the most by any country at the regional tournament, which ended in Eswatini yesterday.
South Africa were, however, the games champions as they bagged more gold medals with 71 while Zimbabwe had 24.
The major highlight on the final day was back-to-back wins by the Zimbabwe Under-18 boys’ and girls’ teams.
With half of the athletes still eligible for the next edition, the volleyball coaches see a bright future.
“I want to thank my school for allowing me to blossom in my coaching skills,” ladies’ volleyball coach, Courage Shiru, said.
Boys’ volleyball coach, David Mandikuwaza, said:
“This is the future of volleyball nationally, we need to nurture these players, they are destined somewhere.”
With a total of 118 medals aggregated as 24 gold, 48 silver and 46 bronze, defending champions Zimbabwe fell short to South Africa who majored on athletics.
South Africa had 71 gold medals, 30 silver and 10 bronze to occupy pole position.
Eswatini came last in the competition, which also left countries like Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia with more to learn to strengthen the region in sporting excellence. − ZBC
