YOUTH Olympian and team captain Drew Williams will on Friday lead a 20-member Zimbabwe junior triathlon team for the SA Triathlon Championship set for Buffalo City in East London on 1 March.
Williams represented Zimbabwe at last year’s Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, where he finished on position 29.
Triathlon Zimbabwe president Rick Fulton said he was confident that the juniors, who had managed to scoop awards in the past tournaments, will not disappoint.
“This is an annual event and we have managed to win medals with Gabrielle De Chassart, who was our only gold medallist in the same championship last year.
“It’s quite a balanced team with a number of potential medal hopefuls and some have taken part in the championship before, however, a lot will depend on how the individuals perform on the day but we are confident,” said Fulton, adding that he was looking at least three possible medals.
Fulton said most of the triathletes were drawn from St Johns, Chisipite, St George’s schools in Harare as well at schools around Harare, while Bulawayo participants were always the missing link because of failure to take part in all selection events in Harare.
