ZIMBABWE Under-18 coach Godwin Murambiwa said it was tough to come up with a squad for this year’s Craven Week, following the selection process at Falcon College on Saturday.

Murambiwa now has a shortlist of 22 players he will work with for the schoolboys rugby tournament in South Africa in July.

Players from Falcon dominate the Craven Week squad after eight made the grade, while Prince Edward have three players.

“We are happy with the team. We selected a better team than last year but we have some of the players who are going back for the second time to the Craven Week. Akim Sibanda, Argus Bruce, Tarisai Mapfumo and Campbell Nyakudya are the returning players.

“This year we had a structure which we never had before, we made the provisional teams play each other instead of the schools.

“We are still going to do a lot of training with these players,” said Murambiwa. Sibanda, Brian Mutanga, Stuart Dodington, Campbell Nyakudya, Ben Meridith, Sam Phiri and Jordan Zietsman will all be coming from the Mad Dogs’ yard. Peterhouse, St John’s, Prince Edward and St George’s also contribute to the squad.

Prince Edward coach, Shaun De Souza, who was part of the selectors, said it was very tough to come up with players for the provisional squad. “The level at which schools are playing rugby is outstanding. Credit to all the coaches and good luck to Godwin,” said De Souza.
