A 38-YEAR-OLD Zimbabwean woman died while eight others were seriously injured when a cross-border bus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned near Makhado town in Limpopo province, South Africa.
Police spokesperson for Makhado, Constable Irene Radzilani said the accident occurred early yesterday morning along the N1 highway near Ingwe Lodge.
The bus, belonging to Tombs Motorways Bus Company, was coming from Johannesburg and heading towards Beitbridge Border Post with 65 passengers, all Zimbabweans.
“I can confirm that one person, a Zimbabwean woman was killed when the driver of a bus she was travelling in lost control of the vehicle which then veered off the road and overturned,” said Const Radzilani.
She, however, could not release the name of the woman, saying they were still trying to locate her relatives. The body was taken to Makhado government mortuary while the injured were rushed to Tshilidzini Hospital.
Const Radzilani said police investigations were still underway.
Cases of Zimbabweans killed in road accidents along the N1 highway are on the increase.
The incident comes hardly four months after nine other Zimbabweans died on the same road when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in rammed into a stationary Zambian haulage truck near Naboomspruit in August.
In July, seven people, also Zimbabweans, died when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in collided with a haulage truck on the same road near Beitbridge Border Post in July.
The N1 highway is one of the busiest roads in the neighbouring country that links South Africa with Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa.
