WINNERS of the 2014 Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima) will finally receive their gongs next month. Award organisers last year failed to give the winning musicians trophies after CEP South Africa – the company they had engaged to supply the trophies – let them down at the last hour citing monetary issues.
Zima spokesperson Farai Chapotera said the trophies were eventually delivered last month.
“We’ve since received the trophies but we couldn’t give the winners last month as we didn’t want to disturb the Namas.
“We also found it important that we hand them over in a manner befitting their recipients, not just to hand them for the sake of doing so,” Chapotera said.
She said it was not a secret that the organisation suffered financial constraints when they hosted the event last year as the corporate world did not support them.
“It’s no secret that we suffered financial challenges, however we felt our artistes shouldn’t suffer because of this hence our efforts to make sure they get their gongs,” she said.
Chapotera said they were working on the award presentation which they would also use to handover Cde Chinx’s house to him.
“We’re organising an appropriate handover ceremony which we hope to hold in the first week of April. Cde Chinx’s house is part of the prizes so we’ll use this ceremony to hand it over to him,” she said.
Chapotera revealed that the awards would be held this year at a venue and date to be announced.
Some of the Zima 2014 recipients were Jah Prayzah, UFIC Choir, Black Umfolosi, Sulumani Chimbetu, Tehn Diamond, Khuxxman, Audious Mtawarira, Ex Q, Mokoomba, Obediah Matulana, Cynthia Mare, Souljah Love, Mathias Mhere, Sebastian Magacha and Sanni Makhalima.
