In a move that is meant to boost the country’s economic cooperation with other nations, Zimbabwe has submitted an application to join BRICS, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira has said.
BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping of the world’s leading emerging market economies. It aims to promote peace, security, development and cooperation.
Other Member States of the organisation include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
In a recent visit to Moscow, Russia, Prof Murwira said Harare has applied to join the group.
“BRICS is one of the most important platforms for economic cooperation that is based on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality of nations.
“Therefore, Zimbabwe would benefit from any system that respects these key principles of human interaction and progress, and BRICS is one of them.
“We are in the process of making sure that we meet the required conditions by BRICS, and we are applying. We will be waiting for a reply that is according to the consensus that will be in BRICS,” he said.
BRICS has been seeking to expand its membership to deepen economic ties.
Last year, Egypt and Ethiopia became the two African States admitted into the group at a BRICS Summit in the Russian city of Kazan.
The others included Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In January, Brazil, which holds the bloc’s presidency in 2025, said it has admitted Nigeria as a “partner country” in the multinational bloc of nations.
