ZIMBABWE’S Karate Nomichi Academy lit up the 2025 Children’s National Karate Championship in South Africa with a commanding performance, scooping an impressive 30 medals and securing second place overall.
Held last weekend, the prestigious annual event attracted over 200 young athletes from across the region, including Botswana, Zambia, the host nation South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
A 35-member squad from the Karate Nomichi Academy proudly flew the Zimbabwean flag, excelling in both kata and kumite disciplines. Their remarkable medal haul underscored their dominance among more than 11 competing clubs at the tournament.
Standout performances came from 11-year-old Shassmeen Yalabi and Charity Moyo, who both clinched gold in their respective categories.
Even the academy’s youngest competitors proved their mettle, with six-year-olds Akil Dhliwayo, Montell Stoddart, and Linhlikosi Chatagwe earning a mix of gold and silver medals, significantly boosting the team’s overall tally.
Team leader Sensei Greatmans was full of praise for his young charges.
“I am very happy with their excellent performance. Winning 30 medals in such a prestigious tournament is no easy feat. They made our country proud,” said Sensei Greatmans.
The Karate Nomichi Academy continues to make its mark on the international stage, raising Zimbabwe’s profile in martial arts and inspiring the next generation of karate talent.
