ZIMBABWE’S culinary star shone brightly in the United States capital last week as the nation made its first-ever appearance at the prestigious Embassy Chef Challenge held at the grand Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington DC.

Representing the country’s rich cultural and culinary heritage, the Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in the United States of America, through its Tourist Office, served up a flavourful showcase that captivated guests from across the globe.

The Embassy partnered with Essie Gourmet, a Zimbabwean-owned catering brand based in DC, led by the talented Chef Essie, whose culinary artistry added a modern flair to traditional favourites.

On the menu were a soulful array of dishes that told the story of home, blackjack greens, creamed pumpkin leaves, and a heartwarming beef oxtail stew paired with maize crispy corn dumplings a meal that evoked the warmth of Zimbabwean kitchens and the richness of our soil.

The dishes were more than just food, they were storytelling on a plate, each bite offering a taste of our heritage, identity, and pride.

Attendees at the challenge, drawn from diplomatic circles, global media, and the Washington food scene, travelled through Zimbabwe with their taste buds and walked away craving more.

In a vibrant message shared on her LinkedIn account after the event, Ms Ropafadzo Dunira, Zimbabwe’s Tourism Attaché in Washington DC, wrote: “Zimbabwe participated in the 2025 Embassy Chef Challenge for the first time and represented very well, showcasing our rich culinary heritage and hospitality. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to position Zimbabwe as a desirable destination, and food proved to be a great conversation starter!”

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) through their X handle added: “This strategic cultural diplomacy effort forms part of the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry’s broader thrust to promote gastronomy tourism through the Culture and Heritage Cluster, an initiative that recognises food as a gateway to tourism, investment, and international goodwill.”

The timing of this global showcase is perfect, as Zimbabwe prepares for the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, set to be held in Mutare this September.
Just as the Embassy Chef Challenge offered a global audience a taste of Zimbabwe’s kitchen, the Sanganai Expo promises to offer the world a front-row seat to our tourism offerings, cultural attractions, and culinary wonders, this time on home soil.

The event in DC also saw collaboration with students like Munyaradzi Petricia Dzimunwe who volunteered to represent her country.

As Chef Essie stirred, seared, and served at the Embassy Chef Challenge, Zimbabwe’s image simmered into a living, breathing experience which is flavourful, colourful, and unforgettable.

The Embassy Chef Challenge was, not merely a competition of tastes, it was a celebration of identity. And in that crowd of over 30 nations, Zimbabwe stood tall.
