Zimbabwe duo sneak into CAVB Commissions

ZIMBABWE sports may be frozen by Covid-19, but that hasn’t prevented the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) from appointing two Zimbabweans into its commissions.

Former Zimbabwe Volleyball Association president Ringisai Mapondera and Malawi-based coach Thulani Maphosa were this weekend appointed to the Legal and Coaches commissions respectively.

Mapondera is the Zone VI secretary-general while Maphosa, a former Highlanders Volleyball Club player, is the first ever official from the Southern African region to be appointed to the Coaches Commission.

His appointment came within two years of his accreditation as one of the Southern Region’s coaches’ instructor.

“It came as a surprise for me to receive such an appointment so soon after my accreditation as an instructor. Previous Coaches’ Commissions were composed of coaches that had won continental titles like Egypt and Kenya.

This shows the growing confidence in the development of the game in this zone and could brighten further prospects of remarkable growth for the Zone VI,” said Maphosa.

“It’s a Zone VI achievement, not an individual one. I am a Zimbabwean affiliated to Eswatini, but based in Malawi where I am now working,” he said.

Maphosa was one of the facilitators of the just-ended coaching clinic in Malawi, brightening his prospects of being included in the international coaching clinics’ calendar.

He helped Eswatini win their first ever Zone VI gold medal after guiding Correctional Services Ladies Volleyball team to the 2018 title held in Durban, South Africa.

In March 2020, he emerged as one of best students in the coaches instructors’ course held in Egypt. — @NoelMunzabwa
