A high powered Russian delegation is set to visit the country this month to finalise some multi-million dollar projects aimed at improving water infrastructure in Harare and surrounding towns.
Environment, Water and Climate Minister Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, who was in Russia a fortnight ago, told The Sunday Mail that the projects are aimed at dam construction, irrigation development and water management.
“The visit to Russia, which was in pursuance of the existing strong bilateral ties between the two countries, was very successful and we agreed in principle to run a number of projects related to water infrastructure.
“We are also looking at mitigating climate change through proper management of water bodies. We expect fruitful completion of the deals by January,” he said.
Cde Kasukuwere said the deals will see Russian entities supplying equipment for the infrastructure projects.
“The Russians are keen to provide equipment for irrigation and dam construction. There are many dam projects that have been stalled for a long time and these projects will be brought into life once we conclude the deals.
“What this means is that these deals will bring real change to our people and our communities in line with the Zim-Asset agenda.
These projects will also create employment and help in the development of our economy,” said Cde Kasukuwere.
The minister could not disclose the value of the deals for fear of pre-empting negotiations.
During the recent visit, Cde Kasukuwere also discussed the US$3 billion Zimbabwe-Russia Great Dyke Platinum investment with the dialogue focusing on the environmental aspects of the massive project.
Zimbabwe has strong relations with Russia dating back to the days of the liberation struggle when the Soviet nation provided military, intelligence and technical support in the fight against the settler regime.
