Zimbabwe is taking steps to regulate aluminium sulphate imports by addressing the cost factors for local manufacturers.
This is intended to help them compete on local, regional, and international levels.
Speaking during a visit to Chilmund Chemical, a water treatment chemicals’ manufacturing company in Bindura, Industry and
Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu emphasised the need for locally produced goods.
He said the Government is working hard to identify and reduce costs for local manufacturers, to facilitate their ability to export
their products.
Minister Ndlovu also highlighted the importance of ensuring that imported products meet the required standards as many
cheap imports are not properly tested. Some are smuggled into the country.
“There are plans to enforce regulations to ensure that imports comply with standards, and limiting imports may be considered
as a last resort to prevent the influx of cheap, poor-quality products that could harm local businesses,” he said.
Chilmund Chemicals’ business development manager Mr Nicholas Bhero said the high demand for cheap imports has made it
difficult for the company to remain competitive.
As a result, standards for aluminium sulphate products have been established in collaboration with the Standards Association
of Zimbabwe (SAZ).
